In this exclusive interview, we chatted with Skog, Co Owner of Divide by Zero and the esteemed Leader of Before Ice Clan. Skog shared valuable insights into his journey as a clan leader and gave us a glimpse into the strategies that have contributed to the success of his clan and alliance. Interview with Skog, Co Owner of Divide by Zero and the esteemed Leader of Before Ice Clan: Building a Successful Clan in Clash of Clans
1. Tell us about yourself and your journey in Clash of Clans. What inspired you to become a clan leader?
Skog: “My brothers and I started playing Clash of Clans when I was 16, a decade ago. As time went on, I surpassed my brothers in the game and never quit. With the knowledge I gained over the years, I decided to lead others and build something of my own.”
2. Starting a clan can be challenging. How did you build your clan’s success, and what factors contributed to it?
Skog: “Growing a community is truly difficult. It’s often said that it’s about the people you meet along the way, and that holds true for us. The key factor has always been the amazing leaders of the clans within our clan family. Additionally, the support of the staff members has played a crucial role in setting our clans on the right path.”
3. What is your approach to recruiting new members, and what qualities do you look for in potential members? Do you consider factors beyond in-game stats?
Skog: “Recruiting as an alliance is different. With a well-oiled machine like ours, we don’t always have the opportunity to look beyond game stats. We believe in giving everyone a chance to prove themselves as valuable clan members. We consider factors such as activity, response time in Discord, town hall level, capital donations, war stars, whether a player is rushed or not, and their behavior in the chat.”
4. Can you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a clan leader and how you overcame them?
Skog: “One of our major hurdles has been Discord. We use this platform to host our community, but it’s not always the most user-friendly experience. We had to adapt our operations when faced with limitations on channel creation. It required a complete shift in the way we operated our Discord. Our staff and clan leaders had to minimize channel creation, and it’s something we still monitor daily.”
5. Apart from in-game chat and announcements, do you use any tools for your clan?
Skog: “Absolutely! We make use of various tools that make a clan or alliance leader’s life easier. Amazing Clash of Clans bots like Clashperk, Clashking, and our own custom bot here at DBZ are beneficial. These tools streamline tasks such as managing clan war rosters and enhance communication through Discord.”
6. Tell us about your clan’s culture. Is it friendly, helpful, serious, or competitive?
Skog: “Since we are a large alliance, our culture is diverse. We welcome individuals from all walks of life who share a common passion for Clash of Clans. We have a mix of competitive players, casual clans for those who want to relax, and highly active, friendly clans. Our aim is to make all members feel special and part of our community.”
7. How do you keep your clan members engaged and excited about the game, especially during low activity or burnout periods?
Skog: “This is a challenging issue. Burnout can affect anyone, but we try to delay it as much as possible. We create events that offer a refreshing and unique player experience exclusive to our alliance. We also encourage members to join different clans within the alliance if they want a change of scenario. Fun events, small changes, and interacting with different people help reduce burnout fatigue.”
8. How do you handle missed hits in wars?
Skog: “For my clan, Before Ice, we take Clan War Leagues (CWL) seriously. Missing an attack in CWL results in being benched for the entire event. However, we are not as strict with regular wars as they serve mainly as practice. Champion League is highly competitive, and a strong desire to improve is required.”
9. What advice would you give to new or aspiring clan leaders who want to build a successful and enjoyable clan experience for their members?
Skog: “Look for what you wouldn’t expect! Sometimes, your most valuable members don’t fit the mold. Building personal connections with your members and co-leaders has always been successful for me. Set your members up for success, and part of that success is achieving it yourself.”
